Details: MADISON, Wis. -- The high cost of security is prompting sponsors of the Fourth of July Elver Park fireworks to celebrate on July 3 instead.Under a Madison police union agreement, the city of Madison must pay officers triple time, and guarantee eight hours of work if they work on July 4.The Elver fireworks' main sponsor, Midwest Family Broadcasting, said that means the security bill alone has been the event's highest cost in recent years."After three years of having to do it that way, it's just not cost beneficial for people to support something that is that expensive for that short amount of time," said Tom Walker, president of Midwest Family Broadcasting. "So by moving it off the holiday, the security costs are a third of what they would be, and then we can make the event basically paid for itself."Midwest Family Broadcasting said that because of this year's fireworks moving to Friday, July 3, security costs will go from $40,000 to $13,333 -- roughly a third of the cost.Dollars and cents are on the minds of Rhythm and Booms organizers as well."If there ever was a year where Rhythm and Booms is important, it's this year," said Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk. "People are hunkered down. We are seeing record attendance at our zoo, record attendance at parks and one of the big reasons why is that because they're free, just like Rhythm and Booms."Rhythm and Booms is set for Saturday, June 27, at Warner Park. Fireworks that night will begin at 9:30 p.m.
