Details: The Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce is still not certain whether it can afford a planned July 3 fireworks display at the Ahwatukee Country Club.
On Monday, Terri Kimble, chamber president and chief executive officer, said the organization had pledges for $18,000, just $2,000 short of the budget the organization had set for the event it calls Red, White and Boom.
But complicating things is recent information the chamber received from Phoenix:
City services for the event including police and traffic patrols will cost $10,000, not the $5,000 the chamber anticipated, Kimble said.
So the cost of Red, White and Boom actually is $25,000, not $20,000 Kimble said Monday.
"Three years ago, the city partnered with the chamber and absorbed some of the costs of Red, White and Boom," she said. "But the city is not in a position to do that this year."
Kimble said chamber officials plan to meet with Phoenix police and parks officials Wednesday to see if there is a way to reduce the $10,000 fee.
Fireworks shows at the Ahwatukee Country Club, 12432 S. 48th St., were a community tradition from at least the 1980s until 2005.
Then sponsors decided it would be easier to have the celebration at Rawhide. Officials at Rawhide, which is one freeway exit south of Ahwatukee on Interstate 10, say they still plan fireworks and other festivities on July 4.
Earlier this year, some Ahwatukee residents circulated petitions that asked that the event return to the community.
Donations of $10 or more for Red, White and Boom, meanwhile, continue to be accepted at http://www.ahwatukeechamber.com/.
