Details: The annual Fourth of July fireworks display will be launched over George Lane Beach on Friday, July 3 at 9:30 p.m.
“Because July 3 is on a Friday, we thought it would be easier for people to come because most people will be taking a long weekend off from work,” said Ronald Rizzo, chairman of Weymouth’s Fourth of July Committee.
The pyrotechnic display was held on June 28 last year.
“We tried staging the fireworks on the Saturday before the fourth, but it seemed natural to have the show on the weekend of the holiday this year,” Rizzo said.
The aerial show will be heralded by a medley of tunes provided by karaoke singers after local D.J. Paul Quintiliani welcomes the gathering at 5 p.m.
“Paul has about eight or ten people that he will introduce,” Rizzo said. “They will perform a variety of songs.”
The lyrics will include country western tunes, e rock and easy listening music.
Rizzo said a medley of big band tunes played by The Frank Castle Orchestra would help listeners get into a festive mood at 9 p.m.
“They will play right through the fireworks,” Rizzo said. “At 9:15 p.m. the band will begin to play some John Phillip Sousa marching tunes and it will continue to play until the end of the fireworks.”
The entertainment will include a rendition of “Weymouth,” a song written by local resident Jim Melody.
“The song mentions Wessagusset Beach,” Rizzo said. “Jim is tickled to be performing in his hometown. He is very talented.”
A variety of inflatable rides will be available for young children to enjoy during the evening.
“There will be a bunch of inflatable rides and mazes for toddlers and games for kids up to 15 years of age,” Rizzo said. “There will be a moonwalk, and some basketball free throw games and a baseball pitch game.”
The fireworks will be sent aloft from an offshore barge
Rizzo said the Fourth of July Committee has high hopes for having a colorful show provided by Atlas Provision Productions, a Jaffrey N.H. firm .
“Atlas is very reputable,” he said. “That is why we use them. They are the best in terms of professionalism and personnel and in the way they organize the show.”
South Shore residents have reported seeing the aerial display for miles away from various locations.
“One year, my son Jeff called me and said the fireworks were great,” Rizzo said. “He saw them go off from Wollaston Beach. He had planned to come to Weymouth to see the fireworks and got stuck in traffic so he pulled in the parking lot at Wollaston. A lot of people go there to watch the fireworks because they have plenty of parking and some good establishments down there.”
Rizzo said he is hopeful for good weather for the festivities.
“We don’t use the R word,” Rizzo said with a laugh. “The weather was lousy last year.”
Low lying fog blanketed the coast and kept spectators from enjoying a complete view of the few fireworks that were launched.
“We did not have rain, but the fog did not lift,” Rizzo said. “We let Atlas shoot off the few fireworks they had already loaded onto the barge.”
He said the decision to fire only a few shells seemed strange to some people.
“I had people ask me all winter long why we did not shoot off everything,” Rizzo said. “But what happened was some of the fireworks had already been loaded onto the barge and were wired to be shot off. Once they are wired they have to be fired because they can’t be undone.”
The rain date for the festivities is July 5.
“We had talked about rescheduling the fireworks for the following weekend, but the committee felt that was too far out because most people take the weekend of July 4 off. We figure that we would get a good size crowd if we have to reschedule for July 5. “
Cancellation of the event will be aired on WBZ (1030 AM). and the Weymouth Community Access TV Channel 10.
Spectators are urged to use a free shuttle service to get to Lane Beach because parking will be restricted. Only drivers with a state disability-parking permit will be allowed to park in the beach lot until 7:30 p.m.
Violators of the parking policy will have their cars towed if they park illegally on any North Weymouth street.
The shuttles will start transporting people to Lane at 5 p.m. and make continuous trips to the beach until the fireworks are launched.
Return trips to the Whipple Center will be available aboard the buses following the show.
Further restrictions at Lane include a prohibition on alcohol and a closure of the boat ramp.
Additional information about the events can be obtained by calling the Weymouth Fourth of July hotline at 781-340-2133.
