Details:Norwich, Conn. — Real estate agent Mary Miskiewicz was not going to see the city’s Fourth of July fireworks fizzle this year simply because the economy and time were working against them.
“The fireworks are a tradition,” she said. “They’re a reminder of community spirit. They’re a great way to bring people down to the harbor. I love them.”
Miskiewicz, owner and broker at Mary Miskiewicz Real Estate for 32 years, has joined the growing number of businesses and individuals who have donated in an effort to raise $50,000, or as close as they can get, to keep the decades-long tradition at the harbor going.
As of midweek, the total stood at $17,257.69, about 34 percent of the way there with a month to go. Greg Allard of American Ambulance, who is coordinating the effort for the Norwich Fourth of July Committee, said their goal of 100 donations of $350 is gaining steam.
“We’ve had about 20 donations of that amount,” he said Tuesday. “We’ve had three or four for greater, and quite a few for less.”
The show is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. July 4. Allard said their contractor, Atlas PyroVision of Jaffrey, N.H., is working closely with them on the size of a show, and has offered a discount, based on the amount of money they are able to raise.
Atlas features Norwich prominently on its promotional Web site, along with clients that include the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. General Manager Matt Shea said the company has enjoyed a long association with the city.
“We’ve been involved with them since about 1997, and the people of Norwich have had some of the best fireworks displays that the state of Connecticut has had to offer,” Shea said.
“Unfortunately over the past year, corporate sponsorships have been (declining). These are hard times.”
But he also believes the economy will have the odd effect of giving a sponsor’s dollars more impact locally.
“People are staying home this year,” he said. “It’s a strange years. I think the event will have more people. Sponsors could have higher visibility than they’ve ever had.”
