Laurel does have fireworks ... and this may be the biggest and best fireworks display ever as the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department celebrates its 100th Birthday. There was some concern last year that the construction of the new Laurel High School Sports Complex, with its artificial playing surface, might displace the fireworks show and mean an end to the Laurel tradition.“Not so,” according to Fireworks Committee Chairman Scott Wilm. “We will move the area where we discharge fireworks from the football field to the soccer field west of Graff School. We will be able to put on a spectacular aerial display this year as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Laurel Fire Department.”The change in location will mean some changes for spectators watching the display this year. The soccer field area used to be available for spectator seating. Now, that area won't be available, but the outfield in Thomson Park Baseball Field will be opened to spectators. There will also be space available to spectators along the north side of East Eighth Street in front of the high school. The Outlook will publish a site map in its July 1 issue showing the designated spectator locations.
Wilm said this year's show will include 2,000-3,000 aerial shots and he expects the show to last 45 minutes to an hour. As a result of the change in location of the fireworks display, the ground displays won't be as extensive as they have been in the past, but the aerial shots will more than make up for it,” he said.Del Henman will be back with Big Mo's Rock and Roll Show to provide entertainment before the fireworks light up the skies over Laurel. The music starts at 6 pm. and continues through the end of the fireworks display.Wilm advised spectators to come early because seating will be more limited this year than in past years. The Fire Department has designed special commemorative t-shirts and baseball caps with the theme “On call since 1909.” They will be available to purchase at the park on July 4.
Firemen will begin door-to-door raffle ticket sales next week, Monday through Friday, from 6 pm. to 9 pm. Tickets are available from any LVFD fireman. Tickets are 50 for $20 or 10 for $5. Starting June 22, tickets may be dropped off at Reese and Ray's IGA, Laurel Police station, Ricci's Express, Laurel Auto, Laurel City Hall, Sid's Place and the Caboose Saloon.Prizes include a laptop computer; a pair of Comfort Fuji Mountain Bikes; half a beef, cut and wrapped; a pellet barbecue grill; an original painting; a $500 photography gift certificate; a guided fishing trip; a recliner; a Nintendo Wii ; a spa day pass; several gift baskets; and a three-month membership at Circuit Women in Fitness in Laurel. The winners of the raffle drawings will be drawn and announced before the fireworks display on July 4. A list of winners will be published in the Laurel Outlook.
