DETAILS: The University of Lethbridge Department of Theatre & Dramatic Arts requires the services of a qualified Fine Arts Technician I (Head Stage Carpenter). This is a Sessional full-time position (approximately late August to late June) commencing August 30, 2010.

Reporting to the Technical Director, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the daily operation of the Department's performance spaces and for regular ongoing maintenance and repairs of the Department's stages and stage equipment. The Stage Carpenter will be responsible for the set-up, rigging, and strike of all scenic elements and will also be required to assist in the building of scenery, furniture, and properties for Department productions. Evening and weekend work will be required. Duties will include but not be limited to supervising all load-ins and load-outs; documenting and tracking all show-related configurations; ensuring proper use and maintenance of facilities, tools and equipment and proper ongoing stage & scenery maintenance; maintaining fly system log; assisting with occupational safety and health of others on stage; and other duties as assigned

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $3,800.00 - $4,247.00 per month.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate must have a two-year College diploma and at least 2 years prior related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and the ability to perform manual duties assigned including strenuous physical exertion. The incumbent will be self-motivated, possess good organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills, plus have excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain a positive attitude. Must be flexible in outlook and approach to the position and be diplomatic in dealing with faculty, staff, and students. The incumbent must know how to operate and maintain theatrical stage equipment including a single purchase, counterweight fly system. In addition, the incumbent must possess basic carpentry skills and be able to read and interpret construction drawings, and be able to work at heights. In-depth knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of theatre equipment and advanced skills in the safe and efficient execution of theatre practices is essential. Welding experience would be an asset. The ability to maintain effective working relationships with all members of the University community, particularly students, is essential. A valid First Aid Certificate, Pyrotechnic and Firearms Certificate, and at least two years experience as a stage carpenter would be considered assets.
