Details: ST. JOHNS - Fireworks will light up the skies over St. Johns again this 4th of July, thanks to the efforts of the St. Johns Rotary Club. But to make it happen, and to assure it happens again in the future, community support is needed.
"We (Rotary Club members) are selling raffle tickets to help with the costs," said Doug Beaufore, chair of the Rotary fireworks committee. "We need to raise $13,000 to cover all the expenses - the fireworks, concert, printing costs."
Raffle tickets are available from all St. Johns Rotarians. They are $3 for one ticket or two tickets for $5. All prizes are cash - $300 for first place; $200 for second; $100 for third; and $50 for fourth.
"Tickets will be drawn and winners announced after the fireworks," said Beaufore. "You do not need to be present to win."
Raffle ticket sales alone cannot pay for the Independence Day celebration. Business sponsors are needed too.
Beaufore said the number of business sponsors is down so far this year, but he is still hoping to get a positive response from more.
"Last year we had 33 business sponsors. We are hoping businesses can support the fireworks like they did last year," he said. "All business sponsorships are welcome. It's because of them and the raffle ticket sales that we are able to do this."
On July 4, the fun will begin at 8 p.m. when Flashback takes the stage at the Performance Shell in the St. Johns City Park.
"We had them here last year and the response from people was very good," said Beaufore.
The fireworks will begin at 10 p.m.
"There is plenty of lawn seating - at the Shell, by the pool, the softball and football fields, even the high school parking lot," said Beaufore.
"Night Magic, the same outfit we have used the past several years, will be handling the fireworks," said Beaufore. "They also do the Lugnuts' fireworks.
"They really do a good job, and they always bring us good weather."
One more way to support the fireworks fund is by attending the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at Applebee's of St. Johns Saturday, June 27 from 8-10 a.m. Tickets are $5 and all ticket receipts will go to the Rotary fireworks fund.
