Details:HAMILTON — Hamilton’s traditional fireworks finale for the city’s Fourth of July celebration is a go.
In the past, the city has covered expenses — about $25,000 for fireworks last year — but with budget cuts on the table, Hamilton City Council decided last year that special events need to support themselves.
Donations for the July 4 fireworks display to date total $24,500.
“It continues to definitely be a team effort,” said Bob Harris, director of parks and recreation and city liaison on Hamilton’s Fourth of July committee. “This obviously shows that the city of Hamilton and its residents care about events such as this and the quality of life in our great city.”
Altrusa, which organized Hamilton’s first Fourth of July parade in 1962, in March offered $1,000 to the Fourth of July committee and challenged other service-based groups and corporations to match its contribution.
Thanks to those efforts and donations from Walmart’s Bridgewater Falls and Hamilton stores, an anonymous donor and numerous donations from individuals and businesses, “there will be fireworks as the grand finale for the Fourth of July celebration,” Harris said.
The committee is still accepting donations “because we would like to offer entertainment before the fireworks as in years past,” he said.
“America the Beautiful” is the theme of this year’s festivities and parade, which is sponsored by the Michael J. Colligan Fund.
“One of his greatest wishes was that Hamilton continue to be known for the quality of its parades,” said Mike Dingeldein, chair of the Michael J. Colligan Fund at the Hamilton Community Foundation. “And we do believe that our parade is bigger and better than any parade in any town our size across the country.”
