Imagine trying to stay fresh, to create something new and interesting in an industry that’s older than many countries. Some think that fireworks first originated in china around 2,000 years ago. Legend has it that fireworks were discovered by accident when a Chinese cook working in a field kitchen mixed charcoal, sulphur and saltpeter (which were all common kitchen items at the time). No idea what he was trying to cook! Fireworks, or pyrotechnics as been an ever evolving industry with a vast array of products from simple firecrackers, sparks or flashes of light, to extravagant multi effect display shells that fil the night skies and overwhelm the senses of sight and sound with their spectacular displays.
So how do you innovate in a 2,000 year old industry such as fireworks? In recent decades, and really only in the past 15 years have pyromusicals become increasingly popular, and now even expected in some circles. Pyromusicals, by definition are “the combination of pyrotechnics and music, carefully choreographed to create emotion in the sky, and ones self.” Many times, pyromusicals performances are part of a competition. Popular competitions around the globe include
L’International des Feux Loto-Québec…one of the oldest competitions on record dating back to the mid 1980’s and held in La ROnde park in Montreal and more commonly known as the Montreal Fireworks Competition.
