The Science Behind Fireworks:

The Science Behind Fireworks: Deflagration, Not Explosion.

Fireworks have mesmerized humanity for centuries, painting the night sky with vibrant colors and dazzling displays. While many marvel at their explosive spectacle, the truth behind fireworks is less about explosion and more about a controlled process known as deflagration. Understanding this distinction sheds light on the intricate science behind these luminous marvels.

At its core, the process of deflagration differs significantly from explosion. While both involve rapid combustion, they occur under different conditions and yield distinct outcomes. Explosions are characterized by supersonic shockwaves and the sudden release of energy in all directions, causing destruction in their wake. In contrast, deflagration involves a slower propagation of flame, typically subsonic, with a steady release of energy.

When we witness fireworks illuminating the sky, what we’re observing is not a sudden detonation but rather a meticulously orchestrated deflagration. The key components of fireworks — the shell, fuse, and various chemical compounds — are designed to facilitate this controlled burn.

The fireworks shell serves as the vessel for the display, containing compartments filled with pyrotechnic compounds responsible for producing the desired visual effects. These compounds consist of a fuel, an oxidizer, and chemical additives that determine the color, brightness, and other characteristics of the display.

The ignition of a firework begins with the fuse, a simple yet crucial component that initiates the deflagration process. Once lit, the fuse ignites a small charge within the firework shell, creating heat and igniting the primary pyrotechnic compounds. This ignition sets off a chain reaction, with the burning of one compound leading to the ignition of the next.

As the compounds burn, they release energy in the form of heat and light. This energy excites the atoms within the compounds, causing them to emit photons of specific wavelengths, which we perceive as colors. By carefully selecting and mixing different compounds, pyrotechnicians can create a stunning array of hues, from brilliant blues to fiery reds.

Crucially, the deflagration within a firework shell is tightly controlled to ensure a safe and visually captivating display. Pyrotechnic experts meticulously calculate the composition of the compounds, the timing of their ignition, and the arrangement within the shell to achieve the desired effects while minimizing the risk of mishaps.

While deflagration is the norm in fireworks displays, there are instances where accidental explosions occur, often due to mishandling or manufacturing defects. These incidents serve as sobering reminders of the importance of adhering to strict safety protocols and regulations in the production and use of fireworks.

In conclusion, fireworks captivate us not because of their explosive force, but because of the graceful dance of deflagration that unfolds within their shells. Understanding the science behind fireworks enhances our appreciation of these dazzling displays, reminding us of the ingenuity and artistry that goes into creating moments of wonder in the night sky.

The Enchanting Chemistry Behind Blue Flames: A Deep Dive into the Science

The Enchanting Chemistry Behind Blue Flames: A Deep Dive into the Science

Introduction:

Blue flames, with their mesmerizing and ethereal glow, captivate our senses and fuel our curiosity. The science behind these azure-hued flames is a fascinating journey into the intricate world of chemistry and physics. This article delves into the mechanisms, reactions, and conditions that give rise to the captivating phenomenon of blue flames.

Chemical Composition:

The color of a flame is intricately linked to the chemical composition of the burning material. Blue flames typically emerge when certain elements or compounds are present in the combustion process. Hydrocarbons containing carbon and hydrogen, such as methane and butane, are known to produce blue flames when they burn efficiently. The blue color results from the complete combustion of these hydrocarbons, yielding a high-temperature, oxygen-rich environment.

Temperature and Oxygen:

Blue flames are indicative of higher temperatures during combustion. The blue hue emerges when a flame burns at a sufficiently high temperature, typically above 2,600 degrees Celsius (4,712 degrees Fahrenheit). This elevated temperature facilitates the excitation and emission of specific electrons in the burning particles, resulting in the characteristic blue color. Additionally, the presence of ample oxygen is crucial for achieving complete combustion and, consequently, blue flames.

Incomplete Combustion and Color Variation:

While complete combustion produces blue flames, incomplete combustion can lead to variations in flame color. In scenarios where oxygen is limited, combustion may be incomplete, giving rise to yellow or orange flames. Understanding the delicate balance between oxygen availability and combustion efficiency provides insights into the color spectrum exhibited by flames, ranging from the vibrant blues to warmer hues.

Metal Ions and Flame Coloration:

The introduction of certain metal ions into a flame can also influence its color. In the context of blue flames, the addition of copper compounds, for instance, can impart a blue-green tint to the fire. This phenomenon, known as flame coloration or flame test, is often utilized in analytical chemistry to identify the presence of specific elements based on the observed flame color.

Applications and Observations:

The science of blue flames extends beyond theoretical understanding to practical applications. Industries such as metalworking, where high temperatures are crucial, leverage the knowledge of flame colors to assess the efficiency and conditions of combustion processes. Furthermore, astronomers utilize the information derived from the color spectrum of celestial bodies to gain insights into their composition and temperature.

Environmental Impact and Safety:

While the allure of blue flames captivates, it is essential to consider the environmental impact and safety aspects. Certain materials releasing toxic compounds may produce blue flames, emphasizing the importance of responsible usage and disposal practices. Moreover, understanding the science of flame coloration aids in developing safety measures to mitigate risks associated with high-temperature processes.

Conclusion:

The science of blue flames invites us into a realm where chemistry, physics, and aesthetics converge. From the molecular dance within hydrocarbons to the vibrant hues observed in flames, this exploration underscores the beauty and complexity of the natural world. As we unravel the intricacies of blue flames, we gain not only a deeper appreciation for the phenomena but also valuable insights into fundamental scientific principles.

Dominator Fireworks Co. Tops 1M in Donations

Dominator Fireworks Co. Tops 1M in Industry Donations

Dominator Fireworks was founded by Mathew Palaszinski in 2004.   Matt was a judge at PGI conventions, spent time in various clubs building and learning the craft including the Bluegrass guild with such greats as Ned Gorski. Matt, knows fireworks!

Matt has always been a generous supporter of the industry, and especially individuals.  His generosity through the years has spawned multiple great choreographers, product designers and even competition as other’s learned from his valuable lessons and started their own ventures.  Matt was a pioneer in what is today known as “Professional Use Only” products.

In 2023, after donating over 100 cases of product to the Boot Camp session at Cobra- Con, in Muncie Indiana the company’s donations toppled a staggering One Million dollars.  Much of that number has gone to events such as the Pyrotechnics Guild International through donations of multiple massive displays, supporting the Junior Pyro’s for many years, and on several occasions donating entire shows of product to individuals to use in their competitions, many of them winning awards.

Other events Dominator has donated to include what is now known as Sky Wars, which Dominator was instrumental in founding years ago through product donations again furthering the education of upcoming designers. Dominator has donated to this event every year and plans to continue to do so.  To our knowledge, Dominator product has made up of over 80% of every award winning display fired at Sky Wars, which has risen to become the undisputed top event in the USA to see some of the highest level choreographed displays ever performed. Here is Scott Smith’s winning display from 2020. (video by firecat8)

Some other notable events supported through the years include donations to the National Fireworks Association, including one of the largest displays, actually 2 displays on the same night in 2012 in Steven’s Point, WI.  Team Dominator and Dominator has been the most awarded line of product in the USA winning awards such as Best of Show at PGI, NFA, Sky Wars and even a massive display at Orange Island in Changsha, China.

Dominator Fireworks is known for giving away large amounts of promotional items such as shirts, hats, posters, flags and then giving away cash for fans wearing the items at events through the “Dominator Dollars” program.  As of 2023 Dominator has given away over 10,000 shirts!  Matt believes that promoting the brand at this level has helped build consumer demand and helps his buyers sell his products.  It worked, as Dominator is one of the top 5 brands in fireworks today.

1-21 on-going shipping crisis update and effects on the fireworks industry.

After record shattering sales due to Covid-19 resulted in record 2021 orders to China factories, what could go wrong?  A major meltdown in the supply chain via the shipping industry.  It appears there just aren’t enough fright ships online to move the amount of goods needed to re-stock to comfortable levels for many distributors, on a global level.

With each passing week of the ongoing global shipping crisis, it becomes less likely that the fireworks industry can fully “catch-up” on shipping in time for July 4th.      Once again this week, only a fraction of the product waiting for shipping could find space on a boat.    COSCO canceled a sailing, making the week’s total shipments even less than the previous.  Yesterday brought more challenges with Huayang announcing that CMA is facing a new shortage of empty containers, and that will likely effect CMA bookings in the coming days and weeks.

Production is slowing due to overcrowding in the warehouses, and Liuyang had several days of below freezing weather which pushed the humidity below the 25% safety threshold and the government temporarily stopped star making, chemical mixing, etc.    Therefore, factories will run out of stars sometime this week and need another week to build stock levels back.    Then we will transition into Chinese New Year shutdowns.   So production will slow in the coming weeks.

2020 Covid-19 = A record year for consumer fireworks in the USA

Who could have predicted which businesses would boom, and which would bust.  The fireworks industry was unsure through April 2020 as Covid-19 concerns heightened across the USA, and the world.  But, as May grew into June, and people grew tired of lock downs and trying to figure out to mask, or not to mask, a picture started to be painted.  A picture saying, maybe this year WON”T be a total bust for the consumer fireworks industry.

Looking back as of this writing in August, just a month past Independence Day in the USA, the numbers turned out to be truly staggering.  Some estimates show sales up as much as a whopping 200% in many states, and even the lowest reports came in showing sales doubling over 2019.  So why, amidst the fears of a global pandemic did something as unnecessary as fireworks “explode” in sales?

Here is what happened.  Americans grew suspicious of what the government was telling them.  While Covid-19 affected a few population dense areas with big numbers, time has told that the disease has turned out to be much less deadly that originally predicted by experts.  By June, with travel restrictions still in place and many borders, beaches and resorts still closed, people in masses decided to celebrate the 4th of July at home, in their back yards, with family and friends.  They came in droves, with some seasonal retail locations hoisting signs days before the 4th saying, “Sorry we are sold out”.   Operators of locations of more than 25 years said never, in their time in business have they had to post such signs.

Distributors are literally sweeping floors that haven’t seen in some cases for a decade, as they have been covered with annual stock that sold out completely in 2020.  Now those distributors turn to the task of replenishing that stock to prepare for 2021 sales, starting with New Year’s Eve which many don’t know, can see sales just as big as the 4th of July in several southern states such as Texas. Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and even into Tennessee.  Dominator Fireworks customers placed record orders to China starting as early as June, hoping to get oders to their USA warehouses before July 4th, 2021.  Several concerns have yet to be completely addressed like production capacity, space on cargo ships and will there even be enough containers available to load in China when needed?

A looming question for importers is, was 2021 a fluke?  We do not think so, while numbers are certainly unlikely to reach 2020 levels, 2021 is poised to be another banner year.  The 4th is again on a weekend, and the huge influx of sales this year wasn’t just the same people buying more fireworks, there was a whole new crop of firework buyers due to Covid-19, and they loved it.  They liked the excitement of the noise, the colors, and more importantly how it brought people, families, and friends together during changing times to celebrate their independence in the USA.

Overcoming the Covid-19 fear to lessen economic impacts.

I felt there was enough good news (that is still often being spun as bad news) that I needed to send this update to business owner’s in the firework industry.

Also, I believe that each of us can make a difference.  As a group, you are not Average Joe’s.   You are business owners, often leaders in your communities.   With enough positives voices, especially from leaders like you, the tone and energy of the world will change from negative to positive.   So I am taking a risk with this e-mail and I am trying to speak for the positive.

I believe our political leaders are doing what they think “we the people want”.    I think regardless if they are Democrat, Republican, Red Communists, or any other party, they need to feel safe that “we the people” are ready to allow them to take some risks before they will remove the lockdowns and allow us to resume our lives.   So we each need to consider if we are ready to accept the risk of the virus and then find a way to help let our leaders know we are ready to move-on.

The virus is very frightening.   One fearful thing about Covid-19 was the claim that it is “10 times more deadly than the flu”.   But, what if there were three separate studies conducted by legitimate, world class, USA research facilities that all showed that the death rate for Covid -19 is much lower than the 3% WHO rate, and it is in fact about the same as the flu?     Would that make you feel personally less worried?    Would you be more willing to push to reopen your business with this new information?

This is exactly what has happened in the last several days.   Here are links with more info about the three new studies (the media still tries to spin the information as negative, but the new data is very good news):

Stanford Study – Real death rate closer to 0.2% and not 10 times the fluhttps://reason.com/2020/04/17/covid-19-lethality-not-much-different-than-flu-says-new-study/

LA County Study – http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/phcommon/public/media/mediapubhpdetail.cfm?prid=2328Mass General Study – https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8232857/One-people-Massachusetts-study-tested-positive-COVID-19-antibodies.html

What about treatments?   What if there were treatments that helped?   Would that make you feel less anxiety and begin to speak-up about opening society again?    Here are two stories about possible drug treatments that appear to be helping:

Remdesivir drug showing early positive resultshttps://www.statnews.com/2020/04/16/early-peek-at-data-on-gilead-coronavirus-drug-suggests-patients-are-responding-to-treatment/

Personal Story of how Dr. Michael Saag Recovered from Covidhttps://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/what-renowned-infectious-diseases-doctor-learned-when-he-got-covid-n1186451

List of 23 possible treatments – http://the-emperor-has-no-clothes.com/index.php/possible-treatments-for-covid-19/

Understand that “flattening the curve” does not reduce the number of total deaths.   It only spreads them out.  The total area under the curve remains the same.  The reason to close the economy was not to reduce total deaths, it was to not overwhelm the hospitals.   However, with the new data, we now see the original models were vastly overstating the strain on hospitals.     Also, for every Covid death prevented, there will be other deaths caused by suicide, poverty, lack of preventative healthcare, etc.   Therefore, this is NOT a democrat vs republican debate.  Both democrats and republicans need a functioning society.   Now with the new VERY IMPORTANT information that the real death rate is about 0.1-0.2%, each of us should be reaching out to your representatives by phone, e-mail, or letter and telling them you want this new data to be incorporated into the city by city models and with that new data the models will show it is now OK to reopen most states.

The NFA and APA have also been trying to get a positive message out.  We should all sign the NFA’s petition to Save July 4thhttp://chng.it/xBknpyF6TM.  However, your representatives weigh your personal communication to them even more.   If you would like, I am willing to work with you to draft a letter that contains factual scientific information that might help your representative make a more balanced judgment that better weighs the costs of extended shut-downs.   I know it feels like we “can’t fight city hall” but I think with this new information, now is the time to begin to try.

Thank you

Buying Fireworks Online A Solid Option For 2020

Buying Fireworks Online – How to get your fireworks during the Covid-19 crisis.

2020 will certainly be remembered as the year that Covid-19 ravaged the planet, introducing new terms such as “social distancing” and “stay at home orders”.  As of this writing, the full effects on society cannot be known but there is fear of crashing economies and what some are calling the “new normal”  In the USA, many patriots and fireworks lovers are wondering how, and even if they will be able to celebrate the 4th of July.  Some larger public displays have been canceled more than 90 days in advance in fear of large gatherings of people!

China’s supply chain is back open and stock will be at acceptable levels for Independence Day 2020 in the USA.  With states issuing “shelter in place orders” folks are looking for solutions, and by the 4th of July the hope is most of the Covid-19 fear has passed.  Even if it has not, by summer Americans will be needing to be outside, and do what they can to retain some sense of normal life, including the backyard BBQ’s and fireworks!  One of the major concerns from this pandemic is depression from income loss, lack of socializing and seeing friends and family members for extended periods, and general fear of the unknown.

2020 will very likely become a year of “staycations” vs vacations with many people feeling a financial pinch.  What better way to pass the time and stat planning a 4th of July party now?  You don’t need to invite droves of people yet, but planning now can help pass the time and take your mind to a better place.  Many Doninator Fireworks dealers are well stocked and ready ship fireworks directly to your door, contact free!  Avoid the potential crowds and buy fireworks online early for best selection.  We stock one of the largest selections in the USA at the most competitive prices online.

Report: Spring NFA Convention in Columbus Georgia

Dominator Fireworks recently participated the spring NFA convention March 2-5 in Columbus, GA.

If you sell fireworks in the USA, the NFA (National Fireworks Association) annual conventions are a MUST attend event.  Distributors, wholesalers and retailers convene to meet suppliers, see the latest products, and get important industry updates.  Besides hosting the largest annual trade show, the NFA conventions also include informative presentations on the latest government regulations, industry challenges in China, and even sales and marketing seminars it’s members can benefit from.

The spring convention saw low attendance, largely due to a perfect storm of travel fears with Covid-19 spreading,  Supply troubles from China  resulting in delayed availability of new items stateside, and terrible weather – over 5″ of rain fell over a 4 day period making evening demo’s a challenge to set up and shoot, but all were fired almost perfectly with a nice indoor viewing area to keep onlookers warm and dry!  (Check the Dominator Facebook page for live stream of the demo)

Ed Vasel presented the best attended seminar of the week on Pyrotechnic Choreography 101.  It was followed by some great questions and discussion that we hope everyone learned something from.  Our team has had unique opportunities to work with many companies in the USA and around the globe on all sizes of shows, sharing those experiences with other’s is a great way to network and improve industry standards.  Other seminars presented by Tom Dunnaway, Bob Kellner and Steve Houser covered DOT transportation issues and 3rd party product testing.

We had some great conversations with NFA BOD members Bob Kellner and Steve Houser on the NFA’s stance and strategy on current industry issues such as proposed changes to 87-1, CPSC testing methods, and future convention sites.  Something everyone needs to be reminded of, YOU are the NFA!  It will be what we make it, so get involved.   Whether it’s simply making a suggestion by sending an email, attending the convention, or running for the BOD, let’s all work together to keep the NFA a recognized organization for the industry.

The 2020 Fall Expo is being held in Kingsport, TN Sept 8-12 we hope to see everyone there!
