Fireworks sales start today in Oceano

By TPR Staff

The countdown to Independence Day starts today as so-called “safe and sane” fireworks go on sale in Oceano at three booths operated by nonprofit organizations.

Four nonprofit fireworks booths will open for business Sunday in Grover Beach, but four booths in Arroyo Grande won’t open for business until Wednesday.

The three communities are the only areas in the South County where personal “safe and sane” fireworks may be used and only under adult supervision. Other fireworks — those that explode or sail into the air — are illegal.

All fireworks are illegal outside the Arroyo Grande and Grover Beach city limits and the Oceano Community Services District boundaries, including in Pismo Beach, which stages the area’s biggest public fireworks display on July 4.

Arroyo Grande not only has the most limited sales period for “safe and sane” fireworks but also the most restrictions on when those fireworks may be used.

Fireworks may be purchased in Arroyo Grande between 9 a.m. Wednesday and 9 p.m. Saturday, July 4, but may only be discharged July 4. No one under age 18 may buy fireworks in Arroyo Grande.

The Arroyo Grande Fire Department will have at least two units patrolling the city on the evening of July 4 and early morning hours of July 5 looking for illegal and illegally used fireworks.

In Grover Beach, fireworks may be sold from noon Sunday through noon July 5 to those age 18 and older. In Oceano, fireworks sales are allowed to those 16 and older from today through July 6.

There are no restrictions on when “safe and sane” fireworks may be used in either community.
