Fireworks safety for pets

MADISON (WKOW) - The Dane County Humane Society is reminding everyone to be cautious and considerate of their pets during the upcoming firework activities. The DCHS says pets, and mainly dogs, can become very scared from the loud and unexpected noises.

The following is a release from the DCHS:

"It is best to keep your pet indoors during fireworks," Gayle Viney, Public Relations Coordinator for DCHS says, "but if the pet will be outside, there are some very important tips to remember."

Always keep your pet on a leash or in a carrier.

Practice fire safety - Keep your pet away from matches, open fires, and fireworks - especially ones that are lighted on the ground. Pets may try to sniff (or eat) fireworks and pet hair can easily catch fire if too close to the fireworks.

Take your pet for a walk first - make sure your pet has time to go to the bathroom to prevent any accidents later on.

Make sure pet ID is current - many frightened runaway animals get picked up and taken to local humane societies or emergency veterinary clinics. Current ID is very important in reuniting the pet and owner!

Some animals do fine and don't seem to notice the fireworks. Some do well with just having their owner near, talking in a soothing voice and petting or holding the pet. And then there are some pets that cannot be calmed by petting or talking to them - they are simply too upset. Animals that are frightened / stressed can hurt themselves and possibly escape if left alone. Frightened animals running loose are in great danger of getting lost or being hit by a car.

"We see an increase of stray animals come in during firework season," says Viney. DCHS strongly urges pet owners to use extra thought and caution when deciding whether to bring pets along to enjoy firework activity. If a pet does accompany you, please make sure the pet is on leash and has proper and current identification.
