Fireworks and Fido

Humans enjoy July 4 festivities, but pets can be terrified
July Fourth is just around the corner, and it’s time to paw-ty. But while we are having fun in the sun (or shade), it’s important for pet parents to ensure their animals stay safe during this country’s birthday bash. Enjoy the fireworks, indulge in a tasty burger or Puptini, and read these helpful tips.

1
Resist the urge to take your pet to a fireworks display. We know your pet wants to follow you and wag his tail wherever you go, but he should skip loud fireworks shows. Although the sight may be festive, the loud, explosive sounds can terrify canines — causing excessive barking, scratching, chewing, and your canine wanting to leave.

2
Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Because some animals are prone to destroying entire rooms when anxious, be sure you haven’t left valuables around. Keep your dog in a designated and safe area — you don’t want your new summer sandals chewed to pieces. Leave a television or radio playing to keep Fido entertained while you’re attending Fourth of July celebrations. Definitely leave water (and food if gone for long) in bowls, and make sure the room either has a fan or AC running, if it’s steaming hot outside.

3 Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In fear, pets sometimes have the urge to escape and may become lost or entangled in their chains, risking injury. Always keep a watchful eye on your pooch.

4
Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags. Animals found running loose will be taken to the local animal shelter, where they have the best chance of being reunited with owners.

5 If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4. Your vet will provide ways to alleviate your pet’s fear and anxiety. If serious enough, a vet can prescribe a medication, but mostly your dog just needs comfort and love.
