Every July 1st the people of the Northern Territory celebrates its self-governance by lighting a banger or watching fireworks sparkle over the Timor Sea from Mindil Beach!

The Northern Territory is unique as it is the only place in Australia that you can buy and enjoy fireworks, rockets, bangers and Roman candles in your own yard.

Territory Day celebrates the anniversary that self governance was handed down to the Territory by the Commonwealth Government.  On July 1st Territorians and visitors from all over Australia flock to Darwin and other cities to watch public fireworks shows and compete with one another to produce the most brilliant pyrotechnics display on the only day of the year where people are allowed to light fireworks.

Mindil Beach in Darwin is a popular vantage point to watch the spectacular. With delicious food from the markets, people can picnic on the sand as they watch the fireworks burst and sparkle over the Timor Sea.

Berry Springs
Recreation Reserve, firework display approx  8 pm.

Entry is $2 for adults, school aged children are free.

Firework display at 7.30pm.
Gold coin donation BBQ sausage sizzle from 6.00pm.

Dundee Beach
Firework display commences at dark.
Sausage sizzle by Dundee Beach Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade – drinks available.
Commencing 6pm. All welcome.

Coomalie
Batchelor oval, fireworks display commencing at dark.
Food and drinks available from 6.30pm.
Bring your own eskies, chairs and blankets. No alcohol or glass allowed.

Cox Peninsula
Forsyth Road Sports Complex, Wagait Beach.  Fireworks display at 7.00pm.  BYO drinks and chairs.  Sausage sizzle commences at 6.00pm. No private fireworks allowed.

Jabiru
Firework display at 7.30pm over Lake Jabiru.
Free family barbeque at the Jabiru Sports and Social Club from 5.00pm.
Members and guests welcome.
Alternatively, view the fireworks with a barbeque or picnic at Lake Jabiru Park, Civic Drive.
Note that Lake Jabiru Park is an alcohol free environment.

Katherine
Showgrounds, firework display at 7.30pm.
Entertainment, drinks and refreshments available from 6.30pm.
Free entry through ticket office. BYO chairs.

Tennant Creek
Territory Day Celebration Market at Purkiss Reserve Football Oval, firework display at approx. 7.30pm.
Markets are open for food, refreshments, market stalls and family entertainment from 5pm to 9pm.
Personal fireworks will be permitted after show. This is an alcohol free event.

5th July – Katherine Speedway
Australian Dirt Kart Championships

The month of July also sees the arrival of the rather unique Darwin Beer Can Regatta, which was first held in 1974 as a way of recycling rubbish following Cyclone Tracy and now sees participants creating boats out of little more than cans and plastic bottles. The regatta features boat races alongside Mindil Beach, while those who prefer dry land can join in the various other related events, such as tug of war competitions, sandcastle building and beach races.

Lasting for two weeks and staged each year in the middle of August is the aptly named Darwin Festival, where things to do and see include live music, film screenings, comedy gigs and exhibitions of Aboriginal art, as well as the NT Indigenous Music Awards. Also staged in August is the Rodeo, the Darwin Cup horse race and even a Mud Crab Tying Competition.
