MaGuireās 22-year-old daughter Melissa was also injured by the blast.
She was treated at Christiana Hospital for cuts and burns and released.
The father and daughter were celebrating the New Year with the occupants of a home in that block of Elk Road when the accident occurred.
Gosnell said the father was using commercial fireworks not available to the public and lost a couple of fingers as a result of the blast.
