Big bang theory comes through loud and clear

By Christine Pratt

WENATCHEE — A bang that’s too loud for the confines of Town Toyota Center will work just fine as part of the July 4 fireworks display.

That’s what James Wallace of Entertainment Fireworks learned Friday afternoon, following a test explosion in Walla Walla Point Park of a “concussion,” one of the noisemakers in the company’s pyrotechnic arsenal.

“That will do exactly what we want!” Wallace said, laughing, moments after a heart-thumping bang erupted from park’s Columbia River sand spit.

Under the control of pyrotechnician Craig Anderson, the explosion sent a columnar plume of smoke upward — and ducks flying.

“It’s loud, and you get the echoes off the side of the mountains,” he said.

Wallace turned to the park setting after Town Toyota Center officials ruled that a concussion exploded during a recent Wenatchee Wild hockey game was too loud for arena events.

The noisemaker — 35 of them, exploding within the span of about two minutes — will be part of next year’s July 4 fireworks display at the park.

Wallace, of Wenatchee, said he hopes to coordinate them with a combination of songs that culminate in a surprise song. He’s not ready to say which song it’ll be, only that everyone’s heard it, and it’s not country western.

Based in Olympia, Entertainment Fireworks has put on Wenatchee’s annual Independence Day display for around a dozen years, Wallace said.

The event draws a crowd of some 15,000 people, who recline on blankets spread over the grass as skyrockets burst overhead into dazzling streaks of color that are reflected in the waters of the Columbia.

“We wanted to see what it sounded like in its natural environment,” Wallace said. “This is one of the most beautiful settings. We’re really blessed with what we have here.
