Fort Myers City cancels 4th of July fireworks display

by NBC2 News
FORT MYERS: Residents won't see as many fireworks lighting up the sky in Fort Myers this Fourth of July. Because of the $80,000 cost, the city has cancelled Riverfest and the fireworks show.
Southwest Florida's largest display is still happening. Cape Coral's Red White and Boom celebration draws about 50,000 people.
For the first time though, there will be a $1 admission fee.
"Visually, it's probably going to be better than ever before. We're widening the show out. Usually, we just fire from the north side or south side of the bridge. This year, we're firing from the north side, the south side, and over the middle," said Bob Knickman of the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce.
Bonita Springs is also cutting back their Fourth of July celebration. Instead of fireworks, city leaders are planning a laser light show.
